Steels and cast irons are the materials mostly used in surface hardening heat treatment. The steels with medium/high percentage of carbon are mostly used, that is necessary to give a right hardness to the quenched layer; so we go from carbon steels to the hot and cold working steels and martensitic stainless steels. The surface hardening is mostly used in the ductile irons and in gray cast iron.
